Ray Burt
Willard
Sep 25, 1948 — Jun 15, 2026
Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery
10:00 - 11:00 am (Pacific time)
Ray Burt Willard (born Dell Reay Willard) died peacefully at the Cynthia Lake Veterans Hospice Home in Reno, Nevada, on June 15, 2026, with his precious cat Maxine curled up beside him.
Ray was born to Beverly Pedersen Willard and Frederick Peter Willard in Rockford, Illinois. He graduated from Fitchburg High School in Massachusetts in 1968 and served in the Army from 1968 to 1970. Throughout his life, he maintained a deep affinity for his military service and a close affiliation with the VA.
After his service, Ray lived in several communities before landing in Soda Springs at Donner Summit, California, and eventually settling in Reno, Nevada, for several decades. He was a lifelong learner, earning certifications in engines, gaming technology, and construction. His personal passions included guitars, music, painting, camping, and cross-country skiing. He will be remembered for his gentle nature and his dry, quirky sense of humor.
Ray is survived by his sister, Janice Willard Borofka, and his brother James Willard (Victoria). He also leaves behind two nieces and one nephew. His parents and stepfather, Theodore Hudson predeceased him. His brother Glenn Willard (Donna) also predeceased him. His beloved cat, Maxine, has been adopted into a loving home by a social worker who serves veterans.
He will be interred at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Fernley, NV Friday, June 26th at 10:00 AM.
Ray leaves a legacy to several local nonprofits focused on animal welfare, disaster relief, public services, youth welfare, and the Cynthia Lake Veterans Hospice Home.
We extend our gratitude to the professionals at the Reno Veterans Administration for the care and companionship they provided Ray over the last twenty years. He will be well-remembered by all who knew him.
